Flagship Project - First Women Entrepreneurs Green Industrial Park (WEGrIP)

Flagship Project - First Women Entrepreneurs Green Industrial Park (WEGrIP)

Emerging from a pioneering collaboration between the South Asian Women Development Forum (SAWDF), the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, and Panchkhal Municipality, the inception of the first Women Entrepreneurs Green Industrial Park (WEGrIP) has commenced. More than just a conventional industrial park, WEGrIP represents a holistic approach to economic growth, one that prioritizes environmental sustainability, gender equality, and community prosperity.

This venture not only marks a milestone for Nepal but also stands as the second of its kind in South Asia. Positioned within the framework of Nepal's 2015 Constitution, which champions gender equity and women's economic inclusion, WEGrIP aligns seamlessly with Sustainable Development Goals 1 (No Poverty), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and 13 (Climate Action), as well as Nepal's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC).

With three distinct components, WEGrIP is designed to foster a multifaceted ecosystem of sustainable development. The Service Sector/Unit - Eco-Tourism Zone integrates cultural preservation and eco-tourism with live demonstrations of ethnic crafts and cuisine, offering visitors a holistic experience. The Manufacturing Sector/Unit, comprising 50 small agro-based industries and an industrial complex housing startups and micro-women entrepreneurs, serves as the epicenter of economic activity and innovation. Additionally, the IT Department translates innovative ideas into commercial products, promoting entrepreneurship and technological advancement.

WEGrIP's design principles prioritize environmental sustainability and resource efficiency, epitomized by its pollution-free infrastructure, innovative waste management systems, and renewable energy integration. Featuring rammed earth construction for zero-carbon buildings, the park is earthquake-resistant and energy-efficient, setting new benchmarks for sustainable infrastructure. Moreover, open spaces and landscapes provide opportunities for recreation and aesthetic enhancement, fostering a conducive environment for creativity and collaboration. Common service centers equipped with training facilities, storage spaces, and marketing platforms further amplify entrepreneurial endeavors, promoting efficiency and synergy among stakeholders.

Expected Impact and Outcomes

The anticipated impact of WEGrIP is far-reaching, extending beyond its physical boundaries to transform communities and economies. By promoting green entrepreneurship, WEGrIP aims to create new avenues for women's economic empowerment, generating employment opportunities and fostering skills development. Moreover, by integrating principles of sustainability into its operations, WEGrIP seeks to mitigate environmental degradation and promote responsible stewardship of natural resources.

As WEGrIP progresses on its journey towards realization, it serves as a testament to the power of collective action and visionary leadership. By harnessing the potential of women entrepreneurs and embracing principles of environmental stewardship, WEGrIP embodies the spirit of progress and possibility. As SAWDF continues to champion the cause of women's economic empowerment, initiatives like WEGrIP will remain at the forefront of efforts to build a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
