CSW68's Virtual Parallel Session: Empowering Women Entrepreneurs in the Informal Sector in South Asia

Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), the UN's largest global platform on gender equality and women's empowerment, stands at the forefront of advocating for change. Every year, CSW hosts parallel sessions to address crucial issues, and this year was no exception. As part of this year's 68th CSW session, South Asian Women Development Forum (SAWDF) organized a virtual panel discussion with the focus on 'Women Entrepreneurs in the Informal Sector in South Asia'.

Held on Sunday, March 17, 2024, the session garnered attention for highlighting the remarkable contributions of women entrepreneurs in driving regional development and fostering gender equality. It served as a platform to spotlight the indispensable role of women entrepreneurs in the informal sector. The session's success was evident through the active participation and engagement of esteemed panelists, moderators, and attendees, underscoring the forum's dedication to empowering women across South Asia.

The panel comprised a remarkable lineup of women leaders and advocates for equality from across South Asia, each bringing a wealth of expertise and experience to the table. The panelists were Ms. Pramila Acharya Rijal, Gender and Women Entrepreneurial Expert and the President of SAWDF Nepal; Ms. Damchae Dem, Founder of the Bhutan Association of Women Entrepreneurs (BAOWE); Ms. Mariyam Shakeela, President of Maldives Women’s Chamber of Commerce (MWCC); Ms. Naaz Farhana, President of Dhaka Women Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DWCCI); Ms. Rama Devi Kanneganti, President of the Association for Lady Entrepreneurs of India (ALEAP); and Ms. Ayanthi Gurusinghe, President of the Ceylon Chamber of Women Entrepreneurs (CCWE). Guiding the discussion was Ms. Maryyam Khan, who serves as the President of the Bahawalpur Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BWCCI).

Throughout the session, the extraordinary panelists shared invaluable insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by women in the informal sector in South Asia. From addressing systemic barriers to advocating for inclusive policies, the discussion highlighted the urgent need for concerted efforts to support and empower women entrepreneurs.

The session's theme, "Women Entrepreneurs in the Informal Sector in South Asia," resonated deeply with participants as it shed light on a segment often overlooked in mainstream discourse. By highlighting the experiences and accomplishments of women operating in the informal sector, the session not only raised awareness but also inspired action towards creating a more inclusive and supportive ecosystem for women entrepreneurs.

The success of this virtual parallel session is a testament to the collective commitment towards advancing gender equality and women's economic empowerment in South Asia. As we reflect on the insights shared and discussions sparked during CSW68, it is evident that the journey towards gender equality requires the active involvement of all stakeholders, including governments, businesses, civil society, and individuals.

Moving forward, let us continue the momentum generated by CSW68 and continue working tirelessly to ensure that women entrepreneurs in the informal sector are given the recognition, support, and opportunities they rightfully deserve. Together, we can build a future where every woman has the chance to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
